Bustin' the Yarn Stash

I'm really liking crochet! It seems to be more "forgiving" than knitting, and it's more freeform, whereas knitting seems to be more geometric. I'm really enjoying the uniqueness of each needlecraft and having fun with them. My tension seems to be getting better finally, which makes me happy. It was totally frustrating to me when I first began knitting to not have even tension, and it bothered me equally well when I began my crochet. It's the whole reason I abandoned it in the first place many years ago when my grandma tried teaching me; that, along with the fact that I couldn't find a comfortable way to hold the yarn. Now I think I have both of those downpat, so crocheting can be fun (hopefully!) and not too frustrating. This doesn't mean I won't make a mistake of course or that I won't get frustrated, but at least I won't get frustrated with the basic stuff.

I just finished up two projects from Debbie Stoller's "Happy Hooker" crochet book. They were fun to crochet, and quick! I finished the "Spring in Winter" hat during a short outing with my best friend, and the "Cold Shoulders Capelet" took pretty much one whole day. It would've taken a shorter time except I used more of a light worsted weight yarn, and while I had the stitch gauge right, no matter what I did, I couldn't get the row gauge right. I had to rip out what I had previously done, and what I did was just to double crochet two rows to each row listed in the pattern to get me to the right length. Best of all, both of these projects were made using yarn I already had in my yarn stash that were not enough to make for larger projects; possibly yarn I might've already thrown away had I not been such a packrat, so they're in essence "free" projects! Yay! The hat I'm sure will be for my daughter. It's close fitting, and for somebody like me that has poufy, naturally curly hair, it just doesn't do the hat justice. It's much cuter on somebody with long, straight hair.
