God Emptied Himself for Us

God's great humility and unmeasureable, boundless love for us is beautifully illustrated by St. Ephraim of Syria (+373 A.D.). It's nearly impossible for me to wrap my head around God's omnipresence and size, and that He became a Man for us; that He who fills all things became limited in the shell of human flesh, bones, and blood, and that again, He did it all for each and every one of us. Indeed, I muse with David: "What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; you have put all things under his feet". (Psalm 8:4-6) Why does God care about us human beings so much, especially when we are constantly choosing other things over Him; we turn our backs on Him, ignore Him, even curse Him and blaspheme against Him, and are ungrateful to all He has done for us. I know His love is unconditional and perfect, but as a human being, I can't help but think of His love in human terms and conditions I guess.

Great is the love, compassion, and mercy of God, and great is His longsuffering and patience with us!

He who measures the heavens with the span of His hand lies in a manger a span's breadth;
He whose cupped hands contain the sea is born in a cave;
His glory fills the heavens and the manger is filled with His splendor.
Moses wished to see His glory but was unable to see Him as he wished;
Let us come and see Him today as He lies in the manger in swaddling clothes.
Formerly there was none who dared to see God and still live, but today all who have seen Him are saved from the second death.
