I just finished making an amigurumi dolphin toy for my niece- or nephew-to-be using this adorable pattern (kudos to the designer!). My sister-in-law likes dolphins, and so I thought it might be cute to make one for their baby. The pattern was easy to follow; my only problem was that for whatever reason, some areas in the tail stitches left some big gaps, so you can see the stuffing poking through (I'm sure it's something I did); I even used a smaller hook (G-6/4.0mm) to get the exact length gauge which I thought wouldn't be a problem for the gappy stitches, but it still happened anyway. I'm not sure if there's something I can do to minimize that (even though I didn't stuff it very firmly so the stitches wouldn't pull apart further), but I'll try. I also think I need to stuff the body a bit more too, but I'm going to let the toy sit for a few days and "settle" before I do anything else.
I really need to get started on that baby sweater...the problem is, knitting that first long piece gets a bit monotonous, and I'm bored with it already (I'm not sure I even have 50 rows done, and I need to knit almost 200 rows). I'd like to have the sweater, hat, and booties done by May maybe, then if I'm going to do a blanket, I can work on that, too. If I do one, I'd like to do this one because it's not your typical baby blanket and it looked fun, plus, it's either gender-friendly, and I thought it made a nice transition to toddlerhood too.
I don't know if I have the skills or patience to do this blanket; as it is, I'm planning on making a sweater, hat, and booties, and have the two toys already made, so if I don't do a blanket too, I don't think it's a terrible thing. I guess I'll have to wait to see how things are going before I make a decision about whether or not to do a blanket. I already have the yarn, so I'm at least set if I wanted to try it. The nice thing is that each "crayon" is done individually; if I felt that I couldn't do it or didn't want to continue the project, I'll only lose the time and materials from making that one crayon. If I do want to go forth with it, I think making each individual crayon will give me a sense of accomplishment, rather than trying to knit or crochet an entire baby blanket in one piece and feeling like it will never be finished (which is what's happened to me in the past when knitting baby blankets).
