Diving into New Territory...Intarsia Crochet Style!

I decided to start at least the red "crayon" on the "Color Me" crayon baby blanket. I crocheted the two black bands at the end of the crayon and weaved in all those ends, and crocheted up to the last row before the oval (the intarsia work) begins. The color in this picture isn't entirely accurate; I took several pictures to try to get a good depiction of both the color and the stitch definition, but I just can't seem to capture either one.

I do have to say one thing--the stitch pattern is the same exact stitch pattern that was used for my first crochet project (the afghan I started at my crochet class), and this project looks MUCH NICER than my afghan! Thus far, the rows line up perfectly...I almost look like I know what I'm doing!!! In my afghan, they don't line up at all. I may or may not have time to start the intarsia work today, but I was able to get a bit of the first section of this blanket done to see if it's something I might want to finish. I'll do the red crayon in its entirety, and then I can make a definite decision. I wish I would've known how to do this when I was pregnant with my kids...it would've been a really fun, cute blanket for them. But, hopefully, it will make a nice gift for my niece or nephew instead.

UPDATE: (Tuesday, March 4)

I just finished the crayon part of the first block. All I have left to do is to crochet the letters, which was challenging my first two attempts to make the letter "R" (sadly, it didn't look anything remotely like the letter "R"!) I took this picture on our deck...those white flecks on the deck are SNOW...AGAIN (ick). It's really cold here. I took the picture rather shoddily as I was freezing and I didn't lay out the crayon very neatly as I was in a hurry to get back in the warmth of the house; it kind of curved, but I wanted to take the picture outside to get some good light on it. I can't wait to see if I can finally crochet those letters; if I can't, I can always stitch them directly on the crayon I suppose.
